First Annual Houston Premedical Academy Research Symposium
On January 10, 2001, Senior Associate Dean, James L. Phillips, M.D., will host the 1st Annual Research Symposium of the Houston Premedical Academy,
a consortium of the DeBakey High School for Health Professions, the University of Houston, and Baylor College of Medicine. Dean Phillips is responsible for student recruitment and retention, cultural diversity, and
he also has the oversight responsibility for this program. In the program, 10 students are selected each year from the DeBakey High School, who then matriculate to the University of Houston, and then on to Baylor
(pending maintaining the required GPA and MCAT).
Following one year at the University of Houston, the students participate in the Baylor/Rice Honors Premedical Academy (HPA). This Minority Medical
Education Program (MMEP) is a 6-week summer enrichment program sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. In years two and three, we coordinate their placement in research programs out of state, either at the
National Institutes of Health (NIH), or at other medical schools. The summer of 2000, 13 students worked in research labs either at the NIH or medical schools at NYU, Case Western Reserve, Morehouse, Emory, Harvard,
Medical College of Wisconsin, and MIT.
The symposium was established to further enhance the preparedness of these students for medical school, and to stimulate and cultivate their
interests in research, and careers in academic medicine. The format will include poster presentations in the morning followed by oral presentations in the afternoon.
The featured speaker will be Patrice Desvigne-Nickens, M.D., Leader, Cardiovascular Medicine, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the NIH.
Dr. Nickens’ topic of discussion will be Cardiovascular Disease in Women.
