Facts About Prostate Cancer
In the United States, cancer accounts for approximately one quarter of the deaths
in the population, and urologic cancers account for fully 40 percent of the cancers diagnosed in men.
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer, other than skin
cancer, among men in the United States and is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer-related death among men.
The American Cancer Society estimates that 198,100 new cases of prostate
cancer will be diagnosed and 31,500 men will die of the disease in 2001.
Age, race, ethnicity, and family history are factors that affect the risk of prostate
cancer. About 80 percent of all men with clinically diagnosed prostate cancer are age 65 or older.

Equipment Damage Reporting Deadline September 15
The cut-off date for eligibility for claiming damaged equipment from Tropical Storm
Allison is September 15, 2001. This date should give those laboratories previously located in the basements enough time to address any issues still existing with
respect to insurance company assessment of equipment status. A listing of all equipment from the basement or sub-basement is available from Ritter in S114 if
you do not yet have one. For laboratories above the flooded levels, this date should permit assessment of possible equipment damage in your current
laboratories. If you have any issues, contact Ritter representatives in S114 or Phillip Dee in Facilities, S103.

Program for Research Interim Support Available
The Program for Research Interim Support is designed to provide short-term relief
funding for established laboratories that have experienced a lapse in funding. The program will provide awards for up to nine months duration to faculty who are
recommended for the program by their academic unit heads and who have been approved for funding by the Advisory Committee for Interim Research Support. The
deadline for funding is September 10. It is anticipated that faculty applying for the program will have just received notification that a competing renewal falls
somewhat above the payline. Only those applications scored within the 60th percentile will be considered for interim funding.
All BCM tenured and tenure-track faculty are eligible. Funding is for competitive
renewals only. Any given application may receive interim funding only once, and investigators may apply only once per three years.
Interim funds are provided to maintain research programs through support of
graduate students, technicians, postdoctoral fellows, and by providing supplies. Interim support will not cover faculty salaries. Instead, it is understood that
departments will express their enthusiasm for specific research programs by providing faculty salary support from departmental resources for faculty whom they nominate for interim funding.
For application information, contact Emily Hughes in the Office of Research at 713-798-6394, or ehughes@bcm.tmc.edu.
