Students Participate in Matthew Carter Service Day

More than 100 BCM students participated in the Matthew Carter Service Day Project on March 3.  The Project was spearheaded by first-year students to honor their classmate who was killed last September.

“Matt had a strong commitment to volunteerism and he gave his time as a paramedic and as a mentor for inner city youth,” said Karen Shahar, one of the Project coordinators.  “We wanted to honor Matt’s spirit of volunteerism by reaching out to our community through a united effort. It is our hope that the Matthew Carter Service Day becomes an annual event at Baylor.”

Project coordinators worked with local organizations and developed seven volunteer opportunities from which students could choose.  The organizations served by the students were the Phoenix Outreach Youth Center, the Santa Maria Hostel for inner city youth, Star of Hope, which provides temporary housing for individuals and families, Omega House, a hospice for HIV infected adults, Habitat for Humanity, Magnificat House, which serves Houston’s homeless, and the Center for Retarded. In addition, $2,000 was donated to Young Texans Against Gun Violence.

At the end of the day, the students gathered with Dr. and Mrs. Carter in Rayzor Lounge for dinner, to reflect on their volunteer experiences and to share memories of their friend, Matt.
