Baylor To Host Institute of Medicine Event

Baylor College of Medicine is hosting a special Institute of Medicine regional event on March 7.  The event will feature a Regional Distinguished Lecture entitled “Genomes in the News” with Barbara J. Culliton.  Culliton is Chairman and President of the Applera Foundation. She is Executive Editor of Scientific Communications at Celera Genomics and Executive Editor of Genome-NewsNetwork.com.  Before joining Celera, she was Deputy Editor of Nature, in charge of the journal’s editorial operations in North America.  She was founding Editor-in-Chief of Nature Medicine. Prior to that she enjoyed a career at Science, where she was the News Editor for a decade. Campbell Joins BaylorMedCare™ as Director of Patient Relations

BaylorMedCare™ has a new face in the office. Sylvia Campbell, R.N., BSN was recently appointed as Director of Patient Relations of BaylorMedCare™ and the Baylor Faculty Practice Plan.  Campbell previously served as a registered nurse and patient liaison for The Methodist Hospital for more than 24 years. As Director of Patient Relations, Campbell is responsible for assisting patients, referring physicians, and friends of Baylor in acquiring medical care and services from the Baylor faculty who work among the affiliated hospitals.  In addition, the department provides resources to assist patients and their families in hospitals, outpatient facilities, and physician offices, including scheduling appointments, and obtaining outpatient diagnostic studies and procedures.  “I’ve always loved working with people and being part of the team. This opportunity allows me to serve BaylorMedCare™ and the community, striving for excellence in patient care. The teamwork from various departments serves as a catalyst that yields excellence from individuals—individual strengths, one vision—excellence in patient care,” said Campbell.

As the Faculty Practice Plan of Baylor College of Medicine, more than 975 participating physicians provide a full spectrum of clinical services. The leadership comprises the chairs of Baylor’s clinical departments and is headed by Dan B. Jones, M.D., Chairman of Baylor’s Department of Ophthalmology and Dean of Clinical Affairs.

“BaylorMedCare™ Patient Relations serves as a resource for patients and their families to maximize the full benefit of visits to physicians and/or partnering medical institutions.  Also, the staff will serve as a resource for patients across the continuum of care in identifying opportunities and participating in improvements in the delivery of patient care,” Campbell said.

User Support Services Offers More Brown Bag Lunches

User Support Services will host another series of free “Learn at Lunch” seminars.  These seminars feature tips for creating high impact PowerPoint® 2000 slide presentations.

On March 6, “Templates & Themes” will highlight the use of templates to help jump-start the slide presentation design process.  PowerPoint® features a wide variety of professionally designed templates.  Topics include color schemes, custom formatting, and styled fonts, and how these tools can help to achieve a particular look with a consistent appearance.

On March 20, “Transitions & Sounds” will spotlight the use of visual transitions and sound special effects. Special attention will be given on how special effects are used to move or “transition” from one slide to the next in a presentation.

The seminars will be held from 11:00 a.m. to noon in Cullen Auditorium.

First GSBS Awards

The First Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Awards Ceremony was recently held and the following awards were presented:
 

The Professor John J. Trentin Scholarship Award

This award is presented to the students with the highest GPAs upon completion of their first year in The Graduate School.  This year’s recipients are Koenraad Norga, Molecular and Human Genetics; Dongni Yang, Molecular Physiology and Biophysics; Lynnette Burks, Molecular and Human Genetics and M.D./Ph.D. program; Ming Li, Cardiovascular Sciences; and Mark Pennesi, Division of Neuroscience and M.D./Ph.D. program.


The 8-Stranded Beta-Barrel Jelly Roll Awards

These awards are given by the first-year graduate students to faculty and teaching assistants in recognition of outstanding educational achievement in the GSBS Service Curriculum.  Best Course was awarded to “Gene Regulation,” Susan M. Berget, Ph.D., Course Director.  Best Lecturers were H.F. Gilbert, Ph.D., Mitzi Kuroda, Ph.D., and Susan Rosenberg, Ph.D.  Best Teaching Assistant went to Michelle Miller, a graduate student in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.
 

The BRASS Scholars

These students are selected by Baylor Research Advocates for Student Scientists (BRASS), a dedicated group of community volunteers who have supported graduate students since 1995.  This year’s recipients are Michael Greenbaum, M.D./Ph.D. program and Molecular and Human Genetics, and Stacy Johnson, M.D./Ph.D. program and Molecular and Cellular Biology.
 

The Deborah K. Martin Achievement Award in Biomedical Sciences

This award is given to a graduate student in recognition of his/her achievements in The Graduate School. This year’s recipient is Jeannie Spagnolo, Molecular Virology & Microbiology.
 

The Rockwell Scholar

This scholarship is the first community award given to The Graduate School and is supported by the Rockwell Fund. This year’s winner is Grzegorz Nalepa, Molecular and Cellular Biology.
 

The Mary Owen Greenwood Scholar

Originally known as the Baylor Ten Scholarship, this award goes to Allison Falendar, Molecular and Cellular Biology.

Baylor and Rice To Hold DeLange Conference

The DeLange Conference on Neurobiology of Perception and Communication:  From Synapse to Society, organized by Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine, will take place at Rice University on March 5-6. The two-day conference will offer stimulating lectures that address critical areas of memory, language sensation, perception, and attention.

Presenters will review recent discoveries as well as provide a glimpse into the future of novel methods, advances in theory, treatment of diseases, and new understandings in the philosophy of the mind.  There is no conference fee; however, registration is necessary to guarantee seating.

The conference will include continental breakfast and lunch each day at no charge.

Office of Curriculum Offers Seminar

The BCM Office of Curriculum is holding a medical education training seminar as part of its mission to create a pro-teaching environment, increase opportunities for teaching skills development, and increase faculty involvement in teaching. The next seminar, “Supporting the Educational Mission Through Mission-based Budgeting,” led by Robert Watson, M.D., and Lynn Romrell, Ph.D., from the University of Florida College of Medicine, will be on Friday, March 9, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Alkek Auditorium. Buck Receives Humanism in Medicine Award

David S. Buck, M.D., an Assistant Professor in Baylor’s Department of Family and Community Medicine has been recognized as one of 47 physicians nationwide and selected by medical students for the 2000 Association of American Medical Colleges Humanism in Medicine Award.  Honorees were nominated by the AAMC Organization of Student Representatives and chosen according to five defining characteristics of humanism in medical education: positive mentoring skills, compassion and sensitivity, collaboration, community service activity, and observance of professional ethics. The presentation will be held at noon on March 9 in the McMillian Auditorium.

Buck began helping the medically underserved while still a student.  In Houston, he founded Healthcare for the Homeless—Houston, an umbrella organization which allows community groups to collaborate in their efforts to provide health care services to the homeless.

“Dr. Buck has inspired students from all disciplines to work together to provide care to the underserved and has generously given his efforts to make the students’ dreams a reality,” read one student nomination.

The AAMC Humanism in Medicine Award is sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative.

Giving a Helping Hand To Earthquake Victims

On January 26, a severe earthquake registering 6.9 on the Richter scale occurred northeast of Bhuj, India.  More than 18,000 fatalities have been recorded and more than 160,000 were injured.

Baylor students organized a snack sale in support of the Indian earthquake relief efforts. The event was a great success, raising more than $3,500 in proceeds.

HR Meeting To Discuss Ergonomics

Volunteer Fair Set For March 21

The Human Resources Department is organizing a Volunteer Fair to be held on March 21 in Rayzor Lounge from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Various non-profit organizations like the Red Cross, United Way, and Child Advocates, will be on hand to answer questions on how to become a volunteer.
