Clinical Scientist Training Program Accepting Applications

Last year, The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences approved a new training program geared to educating highly motivated students to become clinical investigators. The Clinical Scientist Training Program (CSTP) is under the direction of Morey W. Haymond, M.D.

“Since our inception last year, the program has developed beautifully. We were delighted by the huge attraction as seen by the large number of participants in our introductory course - Fundamentals of Clinical Investigation,” said Haymond. “We hope more people will take advantage of the kind of educational programming we are offering to those interested in clinical and biomedical research.”

CSTP follows a multidisciplinary didactic training program, offering both Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Clinical Investigation through GSBS, and a Certificate of Added Qualification. The deadline for applications is March 1.

“Applications to the program are on the web,” said Sunita Chaudhary, Ph.D., CSTP Associate Director.  All information regarding student admission requirements and electronic application forms is available at the CSTP website.

McConnell Gives Medical Scientist Visiting Lecture

Susan K. McConnell, Ph.D., is the speaker for the BCM Medical Scientist Training Program’s annual Visiting Lecture on February 21. McConnell is a Professor of Biological Sciences from Stanford University, and her lecture topic is “Determination of axonal connectivity during brain development.” The lecture is open to visitors and will be held in Cullen Auditorium at 1:30 p.m.

McConnell’s research focus is studying how the fates of neurons in the mammalian brain are determined during development. A key interest in her studies is determining how individual neurons know where to position themselves in the brain and with which neurons they should form specific axonal connections.

Feigin Helps To Educate Public About Meningitis

Infectious disease experts and city and county officials recently appeared at a news conference at Texas Children’s Hospital to address community fears about the meningitis outbreak in the Houston area.

Ralph D. Feigin, M.D., Baylor President, who is a nationally recognized authority on pediatric infectious diseases, advised the community to follow the guidelines of city and county officials.

“Outbreaks of meningococcal meningitis are confined to certain communities in the Houston area. We support health officials’ recommendations for mass vaccinations in those areas,” said Feigin, who is also Physician-in-Chief at Texas Children’s Hospital. “People living outside of those specific areas are at no greater risk to acquire the disease than anyone else in the general population.”

He urged parents to become fully informed of the possible disadvantages of immunizing a child not living in one of the targeted areas. Receiving the vaccine now could mean a lessened response to another meningococcal meningitis immunization in the future, when the person might be at greater risk, he said.
