About Texas Medical Center
The Texas Medical Center is one of the largest incorporated medical centers in the world, with 42 institutions, including Baylor and its affiliated institutions. Among its components are 13 hospitals, two medical schools, two graduate schools of biomedical sciences, four nursing schools, and schools of dentistry, public health, and pharmacy, as well as a hospice facility, a geriatric center, a psychiatric center, and a forensic medicine center.
Library
The Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library serves all the Texas Medical Center institutions including the Baylor College of Medicine faculty, students, and staff. HAM-TMC Library resources, which include more than 100 databases and 4,000 electronic journals, are accessible from the library, from the main Baylor College of Medicine buildings, and also via a proxy server.
In addition to traditional services, the library offers a series of medical informatics classes, as well as classes on using many of the electronic resources.
The library has three areas where computers are available for users. On the first floor there are approximately 25 computers with complete access to the Internet. The lower level of the library houses a computer lab, a computer classroom, and pay for printing is available on both floors. The lab computers are equipped with Internet access, as well as the Microsoft suite of software.
The library is one of the country's largest medical research libraries and has been designated by the National Library of Medicine as the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region one the nation's eight Regional Medical libraries, serving a five-state region.
Texas Medical Center Neighborhood
Baylor College of Medicine is situated in one of the most attractive areas of Houston. Located five miles south of downtown, the Texas Medical Center adjoins the landscapes of Hermann Park, Rice University, Rice Village Shopping Center, and the Museum District. The area also includes a public golf course, a recently refurbished outdoor amphitheater, an arboretum, fountains, ponds, and picnic tables, as well as beautifully landscaped trails for hiking, biking, and jogging.
To the west, the charming Rice Village offers a wide range of shopping activities, including bookstores, locally owned boutiques, and large national shopping chains. Dining is extremely convenient in areas such as the Rice Village and Montrose, with coffee shops, cafes, and multiple ethnic restaurants representing the cultural diversity of Houston's melting pot.
The Museum District serves as the perfect northern perimeter to the Texas Medical Center complex, containing more than ten outstanding art, history, and science museums.
