A broad range of postdoctoral training opportunities are available, including basic laboratory research and clinical training. Training programs that result in eligibility for certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) are available in clinical genetics, clinical cytogenetics, clinical biochemical genetics, and clinical molecular genetics. The ABMG Medical Genetics Residency Program is approved by the Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. There are over 100 postdoctoral trainees in the laboratories of the training faculty, most of whom are pursuing research training without any clinical or diagnostic laboratory component.

Research Postdoctoral Training
Most Ph.D. and D.V.M. fellows come to the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics for research training. Examples of research areas include mouse genetics, yeast genetics, Drosophila genetics, developmental biology, gene regulation, genomic research, positional cloning, molecular analysis of disease, molecular cytogenetics, gene therapy, and others as outlined in the section describing research interests of the faculty. Postdoctoral fellows seeking research experience without ABMG training are encouraged to send similar materials directly to the individual faculty members.
