Candidates are selected on the basis of their undergraduate academic record, scores on the Graduate Record Exam, letters of recommendation and scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (for foreign students). Qualified candidates are invited for personal interviews. Students are recommended for admission by the Departmental Graduate Education Committee and final acceptance of applicants is made by the Admissions Committee of the Graduate School. The Department strongly encourages applications from underrepresented minorities.

Undergraduate academic records must be complete and presented in the form of an official transcript mailed directly by the school to the Graduate School Admissions Office. Graduate Record Exams should be taken within a three-year period prior to application. The general aptitude tests are required. Ranking in the 70th percentile or above is usually necessary for acceptance to the program. Submission of scores from the advanced test in chemistry, biology or biochemistry, cell and molecular biology are also highly recommended. Medical college aptitude tests may substitute for the GRE.

A minimum of three (3) letters of recommendation should be submitted from undergraduate faculty or research sponsors. If the applicant has had professional or graduate training, a letter from a faculty member of that institution is required.

Interviews with the faculty of the Department are required. These are generally conducted during a visit to Baylor College of Medicine (at our expense), although this may be waived by the Graduate Education Committee where logistically impractical. In this case, interviews will be conducted by telephone.
