Grants and Funding

Among genetics departments at U.S. medical schools, The Department of Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine continues to rank first in both the number of grants and total funding from the National Institutes of Health. Although this data may underrepresent some institutions where departmental structures fragment genetics (Hopkins & UCSF) or where grants go directly to affiliated hospitals (Harvard & Penn), it clearly indicates major strength in genetics at BCM.

Number of NIH Grants Held By Genetics Departments in Fiscal Year 2008

School Number of Grants
Baylor 67
Chicago 48
Duke 48
Pittsburgh 46
Harvard 39

In addition to numerous NIH, National Science Foundation, March of Dimes, and other competitive research grants, the faculty have received national recognition and support from the Pew Foundation and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Top-notch Facilities

The facilities in the department are equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in molecular, cellular, and biochemical genetics. In addition, there are several facilities for specialized techniques to support the research efforts.

Among these are core laboratories for microarray analysis, next generation sequencing, production of transgenic and knockout mice, mouse phenotyping, microscopy and imaging, confocal microscopy, high throughput screening, siRNA screening and other techniques. The department's various research, clinical, and administrative activities currently occupy about 130,000 square feet of space.
