Diagnostic Laboratory Training Programs

Diagnostic Laboratory Trainees
The Baylor College of Medicine Medical Genetics Laboratories provide state-of-the-art diagnostic testing to hospitals and referring physicians locally, nationally, and globally.
The laboratories are divided into Molecular (General and Mitochondrial), Biochemical, and Cytogenetics (including array Comparative Genomic Hybridization) work areas and are an integral part of the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics.
Each lab is a national referral laboratory with a dedicated laboratory director and medical director who oversee the activities of the laboratory. In addition, the laboratories employ four genetic counselors who participate in the interpretation of data and interface with referring clinicians. Collectively, the laboratories process approximately 30,000 samples yearly.
The laboratories use traditional techniques as well as newer techniques, including array Comparative Genomic Hybridization, Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Pyro-sequencing automated capillary DNA sequence analysis, and Maldi-TOF. The laboratories are housed in a modern facility in the Texas Medical Center and are among the largest academic genetics laboratories in the United States
Training programs that lead to eligibility for American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) certification are offered for:
The ABMG requires 24 months of training in an ABMG-accredited program to be eligible for board certification.
Information for Applicants:
Most individuals apply to the program 8-12 months before the anticipated start date. Interviews are granted based upon review of the application package and there is no set time frame for interviews. Individuals considering training should carefully review the ABMG web site for information on "Training and Certification." Individuals whose doctoral degree is from an international institution (i.e. outside the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico) should review the ABMG web site for information on "Foreign Medical Graduates Credentials Check" prior to submitting an application to a specific training program.
