This test provides both carnitine, free and total analysis as well as the acylcarnitine profile. This test is a useful tool in the assessment of a patient for disorders of fatty acid oxidation and other organic acidopathies. This test is performed on the tandem mass spectrometer. There is a two part report. In the first part, free and total carnitine values are reported and the free/total ratio is also provided. In the second part an interpretation of the acylcarnitine profile is provided.

Specimen Requirements:

The test is performed on plasma. For plasma, draw blood in a heparinized (green top) tube. Spin down and send 0.5 to 1 ml frozen plasma in an appropriate vial.

Normal Range:

Free: 37 ± 8 µM
Acyl: 9.4 ± 4.5 µM
Total: 46 ± 10 µM
