The
construction of the new 30,000 square foot state-of-the-art adult stem
cell transplant unit at The Methodist Hospital was completed in October
of 1999. The unit consists of a 15-bed inpatient unit with a contiguous
outpatient unit and infusion area for providing seamless care for inpatients
and outpatients. This comprehensive adult Cell and Gene Therapy
Transplant unit will lead to the expansion of the therapeutic applications
for stem cell transplantation, and will facilitate the translation of
laboratory breakthroughs into clinical cell and gene therapies. This
innovative unit will provide the capability for performing all types
of stem cell transplantation, cellular therapy, and gene therapy. It
will also provide the environment for the implementation of clinical
research studies in gene therapy, transplantation involving novel conditioning
regimens, and the potential role of transplantation as novel therapy
for diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosis, rheumatoid arthritis,
and multiple sclerosis.
The Methodist Hospital is one of the largest private, nonprofit, acute-care
institutions in the United States and the largest hospital in the Texas
Medical Center with 1,527 licensed beds in its seven-building complex.
Methodist is the primary, private, adult teaching facility for Baylor
College of Medicine. Through this affiliation with The Methodist Hospital,
patients in the adult stem cell transplant unit have access to all the
specialties, including radiation therapy, diagnostic imaging, and intensive
care. This is especially important to BMT patients in the event of secondary
complications.
