Program Goals and Needs Assessment

GOALS

The Virtual GI Clinic and Classroom provides online, free, CME accredited, relevant, current, high quality, interesting, engaging, diverse, case-based teaching of gastroenterology focused on the needs of practicing gastroenterologists, internists, and primary care physicians who diagnose and treat patients with gastrointestinal complaints and diseases.

NEEDS ASSESSMENT

A forum of potential users of the site were asked the following question: Based on your familiarity with clinical data, morbidity and mortality data, and/or medical audits regarding common, recurring gastrointestinal cases, suggest topics that should be addressed in the Virtual GI Clinic and Classroom. The responses included nutritional assessment and support, enteral feeding and outcomes, TPN indications and complications, biliary emergencies, endoscopic complications, colorectal cancer, acute GI bleeding, new therapies, new diagnostic techniques, genetic testing in gastroenterololgy, NSAID toxicity, inpatient treatment of severe IBD, Barrett's esophagus, interpretation of diagnostic tests, necrotizing pancreatitis, mesenteric ischemia, GI motility problems, chronic hepatitis, NASH, outcomes research. Needs are also assessed on an ongoing basis through the clinical consultation services at the Ben Taub General Hospital, The Methodist Hospital, and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, all in Houston, Texas.
