Gastroenterology Grand Rounds - Take Home Lessons
The main lessons to take home concerning this case are:
1. The clinical signs and symptoms of a choledochal cyst
are usually intermittent and may be quite nonspecific. Abdominal pain is
the most common symptom in older children and adults.
2. ERCP is a definitive method to diagnose choledochal cyst
and provide visualization of the biliary system to define the type of biliary
cyst.
3. The definitive treatment for choledochal cyst is surgery
with the excision of the cyst and Roux-en-Y reconstruction of the biliary
tree being the preferred treatment in most patients.
