Chan earns distinguished honor
Dr. Lawrence Chan, professor of medicine at BCM, was awarded the Doctor of Science honoris causa by the University of Hong Kong, the institution's highest honor. It is in recognition of his seminal contributions to the development of novel therapies in diabetes and the genetics of atherosclerosis and lipid disorders.
He joins a distinguished list of individuals who have received this award, including Dr. Roger Tsien, Nobel Laureate in Medicine and Physiology for 2008, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela and former President Clinton.
Oldham to lead psychiatry association
Dr. John Oldham, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, was elected president-elect of the American Psychiatric Association, the world's largest psychiatric organization with 38,000 U.S. and international members. Oldham also serves as president of the American College of Psychiatrists. He is executive vice chairman for clinical affairs and development of the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and senior vice president and chief of staff of the Menninger Clinic.
Rice elected fellow in Academy of Microbiology
Dr. Andrew P. Rice, professor of molecular virology and microbiology, was one of 78 microbiologists elected to Fellowship in the American Academy of Microbiology. Fellows of the academy are elected annually through a highly selective peer-review process, based on their records of scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology. There are now more than 2,000 fellows representing all subspecialties of microbiology, including basic and applied research, teaching, public health, industry and government service.
