O'Malley earns achievement award

Bert O'Malley, M.D., chair of molecular and cellular biology at Baylor College of Medicine, will receive the 2009 Steven C. Beering Award for the Advancement of Biomedical Science from the Indiana University School of Medicine.

The award honors outstanding medical scientists for their achievements. O'Malley will visit the medical school campus later this year, where he will deliver a lecture and participate in roundtable discussions with faculty and students. The award includes a cash prize of $25,000.

O'Malley is a founder of the field of molecular endocrinology and has opened many doors in the understanding of nuclear hormone receptors and coactivators.

Ballantyne named interim chief of cardiology at BCM

Christie M. Ballantyne, M.D., has been named interim chief of cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine. Ballantyne will continue to serve as chief of the section of atherosclerosis and vascular medicine and professor of medicine at BCM.

Ballantyne is also the director of the Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at the Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center and co-director of the Lipid Metabolism and Atherosclerosis Clinic at The Methodist Hospital. Ballantyne is the director of The Maria and Alando J. Ballantyne, M.D., Atherosclerosis Clinical Research Laboratory which serves as the core laboratory for the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study, a large-scale study designed to investigate the causes and natural history of atherosclerosis.

He is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of research to improve the understanding and treatment of lipid disorders and the prevention and therapy of atherosclerotic vascular disease.
