Women need to focus on their hearts
By Dana Benson
In February, women's thoughts turn to matters of the heart. We hope to be romanced with some kind of shiny bauble or a box of chocolates and long-stemmed roses. Even a card with a mushy sentiment will do.
But perhaps women should focus instead on matters of the heart of another kind. Being swept away by romantic gestures makes us feel all warm and fuzzy on Valentine's Day, but recognizing the threat of heart disease and then taking steps to lead a heart-healthy lifestyle reaps benefits that are far longer-lasting.
Heart disease leading cause of death in women
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in this country. In fact, more women than men die of heart disease each year. But women often tend to focus their concerns on other health issues – like breast cancer. But many may be surprised to learn that cardiovascular disease kills nearly 12 times as many American women as breast cancer.
Many women aren't even aware that cardiovascular disease is their No. 1 killer, and according to the American Heart Association, fewer than one in five physicians recognize that more women die of heart disease than men each year.
The Go Red for Women campaign launched by the American Heart Association may start to change the lack of knowledge about heart disease among women. Women were encouraged to wear red on Feb. 1 to raise awareness of the disease.
Awareness is key
It's important that women know the risk factors for heart disease and what they can do to prevent it, like quitting smoking, exercising regularly and eating a low-fat diet. Women should also have their cholesterol and triglycerides levels checked, as well as their blood pressure. This should be as routine as regular pap smears and mammograms.
It's not enough to remember the risks of cardiovascular disease just one day a year. Women need to be aware of the risk all year round. Women must think of every day as Go Red day, and realize that keeping their hearts healthy is far more important than the box of chocolates they're craving on Valentine's Day.
