Chan receives Endocrine Society award
The Endocrine Society has announced that Lawrence C. Chan, M.B.B.S., D.Sc., professor of medicine – endocrinology at Baylor College of Medicine, is the 2007 recipient of its Edwin B. Astwood Award Lecture. This award is presented annually to recognize outstanding research in endocrinology. The Astwood Award Lecture was presented to Chan at ENDO 07, the Endocrine Society's 89th annual meeting, held June 2-5 in Toronto, Canada.
Faculty honored by pediatric society
Two Baylor College of Medicine faculty members are recipients of awards from the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society.
Carol Baker, M.D., professor of pediatrics – infectious disease, received the Distinguished Physician Award, and Sheldon Kaplan, M.D., professor of pediatrics – administration, received the Distinguished Service Award. These awards were presented in May at the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society awards banquet held during the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies in Toronto, Canada.
Neurology faculty to lead national organizations
Victor Rivera, M.D., professor of neurology, has been named the first chairman of the Hispanic Advisory Council of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The National MS Society helps patients address the challenges of living with MS, funds MS research and offers education for health care providers. This honor reflects Rivera's national reputation for both patient care and for clinical education.
Dennis Landis, M.D., chair of neurology, has been inaugurated as president of the Association of University Professors of Neurology. This is an organization comprised of the chairs, residency program directors and clinical clerkship directors of the academic neurology programs nationwide.
Lomax earns Alford award
James W. Lomax, M.D., professor and associate chair in the Department of Psychiatry, has been selected to receive the prestigious Ben and Margaret Love Foundation Bobby Alford Award for Academic Clinical Professionalism. The award recognizes a BCM physician for professionalism and humanism and the ability to role model these qualities in the practice of medicine. Although it can be difficult to truly define professionalism, it implies that a physician is acting in the best interest of the patient and always with a commitment to excellence. Lomax will receive the award during the White Coat Ceremony Aug. 17.
Award recognizes new researcher
The Thrasher Research Fund New Research Award Program has been awarded to John Lynn Jefferies, M.D., assistant professor of pediatrics – cardiology, for his grant titled "The cardiovascular genetic and therapeutic implications of muscular dystrophy." This National Institutes of Health program is designed to encourage the development of medical research in child health by awarding small grants to new researchers. It emphasizes projects with the potential for findings that could be clinically applicable in a relatively short period of time for the prevention, diagnosis and/or treatment of pediatric medical problems.
