African-American volunteers needed for weight loss study

Volunteers are being recruited for a weight loss survey at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston to test long-term weight management in African-American men and women.

The study, part of the national African-American Weight Control Registry, will gather information about individuals' weight loss history, which will be used to design programs to help African-Americans lose weight and prevent diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.

Individuals who have lost significant amounts of weight are encouraged to share their history of weight loss, whether they have kept off the weight or not. Interested study participants can call 1-866-WTSTORY (987-8679) or go to http://www.bcm.edu/africanamericanweightcontrol.

Elderly volunteers needed for influenza vaccine trial

Older volunteers who have not yet been vaccinated against influenza this year are being sought for a flu vaccine study at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston that will study the safety, effectiveness and immune response to a new experimental vaccine.

Participants must be healthy adults 65 years of age and older who have no known allergy to flu vaccine and can take active part in the study visits for nine months. Each study participant will receive one injection of either the licensed or experimental influenza vaccine. Volunteers must not have already had the influenza vaccine this year.
