Baylor announces scholarships as tribute to Tulane relationship

Baylor College of Medicine and Tulane University School of Medicine, brought together by Hurricane Katrina, will remain united by a pair of endowed scholarships.

Peter G. Traber, M.D., BCM president and CEO, announced the scholarships in an address at the Tulane medical school graduation in New Orleans. The scholarships were established with funds from community support for BCM's efforts in hosting Tulane after the hurricane.

The Baylor College of Medicine Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a Tulane University medical student. The Baylor College of Medicine Tulane University School of Medicine Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a student at BCM who is a graduate of Tulane University. The scholarships were endowed at $50,000 each. The recipients of both scholarships must be upperclassmen who are recognized leaders and who are making meaningful contributions to their communities.

Carson elected VP of American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists

Sandra Carson, M.D., professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, has been elected vice president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

An ACOG Fellow since 1985, Carson has chaired ACOG committees on Patient Education and Scientific Program and has served as an associate editor for ACOG Current Journal Review (predecessor of ACOG Clinical Review). She has also been a member of the Liaison Committee for Obstetrics and Gynecology and chaired the LCOG Task Force on Student Recruitment. Carson has served as president of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and editor-in-chief of both ASRM News and Journal Watch for Women's Health. She received her medical degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., and completed her residency at Prentice Women's Hospital in Chicago. She has been a tenured Baylor faculty member since 1994 and a professor since 1998, serving on BCM's Academic Council in 2005.

Sutton named Physician of the Year

Fred Sutton, M.D., associate professor of medicine in the department of gastroenterology at Baylor College of Medicine, was recently named 2006 Physician of the Year by the Ben Taub General Hospital/Quentin Mease Community Hospital Professional Image Work Team.

Sutton joined the BCM faculty in 1984 and currently serves as director of medical quality for Affiliated Medical Services in the Harris County Hospital District. Since 1988, he has served as chief of the GI department at Ben Taub General Hospital, and he is also BCM course director for Fall II Gastroenterology Module, a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Gastroenterology.

The Physician of the Year award is designed to recognize and honor outstanding physicians who contribute to the work environment, maintain employee/physician relationships and promote patient-centered care.

Vallbona receives clinical professionalism award

Carlos Vallbona, M.D., professor of family and community medicine at BCM, received the second annual Ben and Margaret Love Foundation Bobby Alford Award for Academic Clinical Professionalism.

The award recognizes a BCM physician for professionalism and humanism, and the ability to use these qualities in the practice of medicine, becoming a role model for other physicians.

Vallbona started his career at BCM in 1955 as a third-year pediatric resident where he worked under the direction of William Spencer, M.D., at the Southwestern Poliomyelitis Respiratory and Rehabilitation Center at Jeff Davis Hospital. In 1969, Vallbona became chair of community medicine and his primary responsibility was to provide medical faculty to staff the neighborhood health centers of the Harris County Hospital District.

Allen elected chair of Baylor College of Medicine board

Robert H. Allen has been elected chair of the Baylor College of Medicine Board of Trustees.

The trustees also named two new members to the board – Robert T. Brockman, founder, chairman and CEO of Universal Computer Systems Inc., and Ali Saberioon, president and CEO of Sabco Oil and Gas Corporation.

Allen, who has served on the BCM board since 1980, succeeds Corbin J. Robertson Jr., who just completed a five-year term as chair. Robertson will continue to serve as a trustee and will chair the board's Endowment, Development and Fine Arts Committee.

A private investor who has been instrumental in the start-up of several natural resource companies, including Getty Resources Ltd., Allen retired as chair and CEO from Gulf Resources and Chemical Corporation in 1982. He is now the managing partner of Challenge Investment Partners, a diversified natural resources-based partnership.
