BCM honors Alumni Association president, alumni, facultyBaylor College of Medicine’s Distinguished Alumni Award went to Clarence P. Alfrey, MD, of the Class of 1955, and John W. Herndon, MD, of the Class of 1953 during the recent 42nd Annual Alumni Awards Banquet held as part of a weekend of meetings, open houses and receptions for returning graduates of the College. The BCM Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award was awarded to Edwin M. Stone, MD, PhD, Class of 1983 (graduate school) and Class of 1985 (medical school). Winning Distinguished Faculty Awards were Stanley H. Appel, MD, chairof the BCM department of neurology and Martin I. Lorin, MD, BCM professor of pediatrics. Sandy B. Bahm, MD, II, Class of 1969, was welcomed as the new president of the Alumni Association. The college also honored Bert E. Davis, MD, Class of 1931, on his 100th birthday and for his service and professionalism in the field of medicine.
BCM recognizes faculty members for excellence in educationBaylor College of Medicine honored faculty members for their excellence in educational leadership in recent ceremonies at the College. The four faculty members who received the Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching included Hiram E. Gilbert MD, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology and associate dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences; Richard Goodgame, MD, professor of medicine; Kalpalatha K. Guntupalli, MD, professor of medicine; and Carlos Vallbona, MD, professor of family and community medicine. Established in 1999, the Robertson awards recognize faculty members who have made long-standing, consistent and highly valued contributions to the educational mission of the College. Recipients become members of the Baylor Society of Presidential Educators, a crystal award and $10,000. Ten faculty members received the Fulbright and Jaworski L.L.P Faculty Excellence Award for educational leadership. Receiving awards were Carmel Dyer, MD, associate professor of medicine; Florence Eddins-Folensbee, MD, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences; Lois Friedman, MD, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences; Ernest Fruge, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics and family and community medicine; Mary Gresik, MD, associate professor of pathology and pediatrics; Kalpalatha K. Guntupalli, MD, professor of medicine; Elizabeth Nelson, MD, assistant professor of medicine; Virginia F. Schneider PA-C, professor of family and community medicine; Gayle Slaughter, PhD, associate professor of molecular and cellular biology; and Stephen Stayer, MD, associate professor of anesthesiology and pediatrics. The 17 faculty members who received awards for teaching and evaluation
included: Five faculty members received awards for development of enduring educational materials including Robert Atmar, MD, associate professor of medicine; Biykem Bozkurt, MD, associate professor of medicine; Kalpalatha K. Guntupalli, MD, professor of medicine; Virginia F. Schneider, PA-C, assistant professor of family and community medicine; and Sheila Goodnight-White, MD, associate professor of medicine. Two faculty members received the John P. McGovern Outstanding Teacher Awards -- David Rowley, PhD, associate professor of molecular and cellular biology, for excellence in pre-clinical sciences and Edward Lee Poythress, MD, assistant professor of medicine, for excellence in clinical sciences.
