Yao receives grant for $1.2 million to develop HIV vaccine
Qizhi (Cathy) Yao, MD, PhD, has been awarded a four-year, $1.2 million
grant from the National Institutes of Health for development of a more
effective HIV vaccine.
Yao is an associate professor in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of
Surgery in the division of vascular surgery and the department of molecular
virology and microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
Yao’s research has focused on molecular mechanisms and applications
of HIV vaccination, development of novel strategies for tumor vaccination
and gene therapy for HIV infection, tumor, and vascular disease.
Friedman honored with prestigious awards
Ellen Friedman, MD, a professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine
and chief of pediatric otolaryngology at Texas Children’s Hospital,
recently received two prestigious awards.
The American Bronchoesophagological Association presented her with the
Chevalier Jackson Award for excellence in otolaryngology, and the American
Laryngological Association presented her with the Gabriel F. Tucker Award
for outstanding contributions in pediatric otolaryngology.
A graduate of Boston University and Albert Einstein College of Medicine,
her clinical and research expertise focuses on airway problems and congenital
malformations of the head and neck. She holds the Dr. Bobby Alford Chair
and Professorship in Pediatric Otolaryngology. She also has served as
national president of the American Bronchoesophagological Association
and the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology.
Friedman is the first woman to be honored with either award. She is also
the first person to receive these two awards in the same year.
Grant to assist patients’ families
Family members visiting patients at Ben Taub General Hospital’s
Medical Intensive Care Unit soon will receive additional support from
a grant received by Kalapatha K. Guntapalli, MD, professor of medicine
in the section of pulmonology at Baylor College of Medicine and director
of Ben Taub’s MICU.
The $100,000 award from Eli Lilly and Company Foundation and the CHEST
Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the American College of Chest Physicians,
will fund interactive computer programs on illnesses, educational resources
in three languages, a newly decorated waiting room and vouchers for lodging,
food or transportation.
The Ben Taub site was chosen after a competitive selection process of
medical facilities nationwide.
Baylor scientists team with teachers
Houston elementary school science teachers are joining forces with Baylor
College of Medicine scientists to improve science teaching and learning
in the community.
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute awarded Baylor a grant to support
the next four years of the College’s Science Education leadership
Fellows program. Baylor was one of 19 institutions nationwide to receive
an HHMI grant supporting science education within the community. The total
amount awarded for grants nationally was $10 million.
Developed by the Center for Educational Outreach and The Graduate School
of Biomedical Sciences at Baylor, the SELF program promotes interaction
between Houston Independent School District elementary teachers, Baylor
graduate students and postdoctoral fellows through science education improvement
teams.
