Item: Faculty honored for teaching excellence

Baylor No. 5 for NIH funding

Baylor College of Medicine was ranked No. 5 among U.S. medical schools for research funding from the National Institutes of Health, according to statistics released by the agency.

Baylor received $262 million in NIH awards for fiscal year 2002 – up from $221 million last year. The college moved up from its previous 7th place ranking.

The top 10 medical schools for NIH funding included:

  • Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
  • University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine
  • Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis
  • University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine
  • Baylor College of Medicine
  • University of Washington School of Medicine
  • Yale University School of Medicine
  • Duke University School of Medicine
  • University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine
  • University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

The only other Texas school listed in the Top 20 was the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas at 19.

Faculty honored for teaching excellence

A special awards ceremony recently honored outstanding faculty members for their educational contributions to Baylor College of Medicine. Four faculty members received the Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education. They were: J. David Holcomb, EdD, head of the division of allied health; James W. Lomax, II, MD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences; Daniel M. Musher, MD, professor of medicine; and Charles L. Seidel, PhD, professor of molecular physiology and biophysics. Recipients became members of the Baylor Society of Presidential Educators, and received a crystal award and $10,000.

Four faculty members received the Fulbright and Jaworski L.L.P. Faculty Excellence Award for educational leadership. They were: Charlene M. Dewey, MD, and Wayne J. Riley, MD, both assistant professors of medicine; Nancy P. Moreno, PhD, associate professor of family and community medicine; and Marianna M. Sockrider, MD, DrPH, assistant professor of pediatrics.

Six faculty members received awards for educational research: Amy Young, MD, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology; Lynn C. Yeoman, PhD, professor of pharmacology; John H. Coverdale, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences; John C. Rogers, MD, PhD, professor of family and community medicine; and William Y. Huang, MD, and Marconi Monteiro, EdD, both assistant professors of family and community medicine.

Twenty faculty members received awards for teaching and evaluation: Patricia A. Athey, MD, professor of radiology; Holly H. Birdsall, MD, PhD, associate professor of otorhinolaryngology and communicative sciences; Biykem Bozkurt, MD, Nicola A. Hanania, MBBS, and Lee B. Lu, MD, all assistant professors of medicine; John Burruss, MD, Florence F. Eddins-Folensbee, MD, and Robin A. Hurley, MD, all assistant professors of psychiatry and behavioral sciences; Mariam R. Chacko, MBBS, associate professor of pediatrics; Michelle Anderson Lyn, MD, Teresa Kay Duryea Rice, MD, Odell Wilson, MD, Joseph N. Chorley, MD, and Charleta Guillory, MD, all assistant professors of pediatrics; Kamal Itani, MD, associate professor of surgery; Anthony Lucci, Jr., MD, assistant professor of surgery; Issam Mikati, MD, and Charles H. Miranda, MD, both assistant professors of medicine; A. Clinton White, MD, associate professor of medicine; and Steen E. Pedersen, PhD, associate professor of molecular physiology and biophysics.

Receiving awards for development of enduring educational materials were Warren L. Holleman, PhD, associate professor of family and community medicine, and A. Clinton White, MD. Recipients were selected through a peer review process, in which faculty contributions were evaluated against specific criteria.

Two faculty members received the John P. McGovern Outstanding Teaching Awards. They were: Daniel M. Musher, MD, for pre-clinical sciences, and Paul E. Schulz, MD, assistant professor of neurology, for clinical sciences.
