Health and Malpractice Insurance for Baylor Students and Residents Doing International Electives/Rotations

Health insurance coverage for students and residents:

The Student Insurance Plan (MethodistCare) for all ENROLLED medical, graduate, and allied health students provides Emergency and Urgent care for treatments outside the United States.  The student/resident should contact MethodistCare (1-888-955-4200) within 48 hours of treatment to ensure proper processing of bills and medical expenses.  In addition to contacting MethodistCare, the student/resident should also get copies of the itemized bills detailing physician's names, and treatments provided to the student for claims purposes.  It may be necessary for the student/resident to pay for the services at the time and then receive compensation from the insurance company once he/she returns to the U.S.

Expenses for emergency evacuation to the U.S. are covered only if it is a true medical emergency (i.e.: anything life threatening which cannot be treated in that country or the student’s/resident’s PCP advises the he/she has to come back to the United States for treatment).  If possible, the student/resident would need to contact MethodistCare prior to emergency evacuation.

Treatment for care other than Emergency and Urgent care is also provided for illnesses or injuries, which are not life threatening.  The student/resident will have to pay out of pocket and get reimbursed upon return to the United States.  Students/residents must obtain copies of itemized bills with physician’s names and treatments for reimbursement.

There are no requirements for which physician a student/resident chooses to administer treatment in the foreign country.

There is no coverage for costs of repatriation of remains in the event of death.  Insurance to cover these costs may be purchased through Scholastic Overseas Services (SOS), 1-800-767-1403 or enroll online www.intsos.com

Malpractice insurance for students:

When outside the United States, in order to qualify for malpractice coverage under the terms of Baylor’s self-insurance plan, a student must be officially enrolled in the elective.  This requires completion of the “Special Elective” application and documentation of approval or acceptance from the institution or clinical site of the elective abroad.  Approval is also required from the Baylor Departmental/Divisional Coordinators of Electives.  Contact the Office of the Registrar to officially enroll, 713-798-7766.  (link to Joe Workman’s website which gives the detail on this).

Coverage amount: a minimum of $1 million annual and $3 million aggregate

    • If desired, students can obtain a letter confirming coverage from Risk Management (713-798-4509) prior to departure.

Malpractice insurance for residents:

Residents must either purchase malpractice insurance through Baylor prior to the start of the international rotation or request the sponsoring international institution/site to provide coverage.  The cost for Baylor coverage is $548/month.  This amount can be prorated to the specific dates of the rotation.  To purchase coverage through Baylor, either call or come by the Baylor Office of Risk Management

Coverage amount: a minimum of $1 million annual and $3 million aggregate

    • If desired, residents can obtain a letter confirming coverage from Risk Management (713-798-4509) prior to departure.
