Guidelines for Writing Letters of Recommendation
The nominators, with input from candidates, will submit to the Dean of Medical Education Office names of individuals whom they would like to write letters of recommendation on behalf of the candidate. The Dean of Medical Education Office will contact these individuals.
If you are requested to write a letter for a candidate you should:
- Indicate your relationship to the candidate, length of association and basis upon which the recommendation is made.
- Address in detail specifics of the educational selection criteria taking advantage of personal, first hand knowledge and experience with the candidate’s work. It is important to select those criteria that you are qualified to discuss, providing credible testimony regarding the candidate’s accomplishments.
- Address the breadth and exceptional educational contributions of the candidate as perceived by yourself, learners, peers and colleagues, demonstrating that the candidate is widely held in high esteem.
While the committee will review candidates’ curriculum vitae and biosketch it is anticipated that the letters of recommendation will have a great influence on the selection of award recipients.
The letter must be submitted to the Dean of Medical Education Office by the deadline for letters of recommendation (see Timeline) in order to be considered.
Letters of Recommendation should be mailed to:
