Benefits of the Educational Scholars Fellowship Program
The first class of the new program was enrolled 2003-2005. Here’s what the Fellows of the MTFP (forerunner of this program) have observed:
The program enhances Fellow’s knowledge of current theories, and techniques.
"The MTFP reinforced my belief that education is an academic discipline which can (and should) be approached with the same degree of rigor as our clinical work and our research endeavors."
- - Pediatrics
"One of the most important benefits of the MTFP for me was to learn the science and the psychology involved in teaching."
- - Surgery
"The fellowship has introduced me to many different concepts and theories of teaching. It made me realize that teaching can be approached as a science, with deliberate planning of instructional methods depending on the goals to be achieved."
- - Medicine
"Even though prior to the course I considered myself a good teacher, my previous knowledge was both reinforced and greatly enhanced."
- - Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
The program increases Fellow’s skills and confidence as educators.
"The MTFP helped me save time by helping me become more efficient in completing educational tasks such as preparing exams. "
- - Pharmacology
"I now eagerly seize the opportunity to teach either my residents, medical students or other professionals….If one approach will not work, I now can try other methods with which I was previously unacquainted."
- - Anesthesiology
"My own teaching effectiveness has been enhanced…I recently received an award for the quality of my presentations at a major national meeting, I think largely as a result of the sophistication gained during the MTFP."
- - Urology
"My evaluations in the classroom have improved tremendously. I now also give better feedback and write better exam questions. I definitely owe it to the MTFP."
- - Surgery
"MTFP increased my confidence and enjoyment in teaching - I do a lot more teaching as a result, not just lectures, but seminars, groups and more. I am earning more recognition in my department as well."
- - Psychiatry
The program fosters collaborative involvement in educational initiatives.
"I appreciated the exchange with clinical faculty; it helped me see the end from the beginning."
- - Biochemistry
"Other colleagues are beginning to seek me out with teaching problems of their own."
- - Anesthesiology
"…the fellowship is increasing the visibility of people at BCM who care about teaching and who have experience in educational programs."
- - Medicine
"I believe that all course coordinators should consider enrolling in the MTFP. In addition to helping you fine tune your personal teaching skills, it gives you the broad perspective to know how to incorporate others into the operation of your course."
- - Molecular Physiology and Biophysics
