Educator Peer Coaching and Review

Overview

Fac-Ed logoBaylor College of Medicine has three mission areas: Research, Service, and Education. In the first two areas, Research and Service, peer coaching (mentoring) and review have a long and valued tradition. Only more recently have the ideas of peer collaboration for the purpose of improving educational efforts begun to filter into the Education arena at the graduate and post-graduate level. See Phase II Report of the Educator Peer Mentoring & Review Subcommittee.

The Committee for Educator Development has undertaken initiatives to enhance our educational activities. Peer Coaching and review are cornerstone components of these efforts with a designated subcommittee directed to focus on this area and bring this dialogue to the wider college faculty.

Committee members are available to present an educator peer coaching and review overview at departmental meetings and to groups of faculty around the college and can provide faculty a common understanding of key concepts, considerations, and resources.

Educator peer coaching and review is particularly valuable as a mechanism for the continuing improvement of faculty educational skills. We envision that this formative or developmental focus will become a routine component of Baylor’s ongoing educational faculty development. In addition, documentation from this process can be used by faculty applying for teaching awards and/or promotion and tenure. The heart of this process is a colleague-based interchange, initiated by an educator.

This web site provides a variety of resources for educators. In our description of Baylor opportunities, we offer two methods. One is a self-initiated technique, Critical Pairs, where interested faculty can pair up to provide reciprocal reviews. Through a second resource, the Educator Consultation Program, faculty members can request a peer consult for a particular area of interest and select a specific volunteer reviewer with advanced training in that area.

Reference materials are provided on this site for faculty who desire to become more familiar with the educator peer coaching literature as well as web links to sites on educator peer mentoring and review topics at other schools and organizations.
