Annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship

Oct. 2, 2009, noon - 3 p.m.

We invite you to submit an abstract to the Baylor Academy of Distinguished Educators Showcase of Educational Scholarship. The showcase is Baylor College of Medicine's premier venue for highlighting work in medical education in peer-reviewed format. It is typically well attended by senior administration, and provides a forum for conversation and building collaborations around educational projects. The showcase will include peer-reviewed poster displays and will award Educational Scholarship Recognition Awards.

Three of the poster presentations, judged by a separate awards panel, will receive an Educational Scholarship Recognition Award. The Award will consist of a monetary honorarium of $500.* (*All honoraria will be taxable income.) All abstracts will be pusblished in the Digital commons Library.

Guidelines for Application:

Applicants:

All persons holding a current Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) academic appointment (student, post-doc, resident, or faculty) are eligible to apply to present a poster display at the Showcase. In addition, individuals from other institutions enrolled in the Educational Scholars Fellowship Program (ESFP) or in the University of Houston Masters of Education in Teaching with an Emphasis in the Health Sciences Program (MEd) may also apply.

Types of Educational Work Appropriate for Presentation:

All projects should demonstrate clear evidence of scholarship specific to education in one of four categories: Teaching and Evaluation, Educational Leadership, Enduring Materials, and Educational Research. Guidelines for what qualifies as educational work in each of these categories are available on the web site for the Fulbright & Jaworski Faculty Excellence Award. View the Criteria for judging scholarship.

Application procedures:

Submit one electronic application (form attached to this email) to Remy Elizondo at remijioe@bcm.edu by 5 p.m. on Aug. 14, 2009.

The application consists of a project abstract. Use the attached form to provide a structured summary of your work to be presented. Structure the summary using 3-5 appropriate headings (e.g., Background / Introduction, Objectives, Methods, Results, Conclusions and Future Directions). Abstracts may not exceed 250 words.

The individual submitting the abstract should be named as the primary author. In addition, the majority of the work must have been completed during the individual’s association with BCM, the ESFP or the MEd Program.

Work that has been previously published or is associated with a funded project may be presented at the Showcase. Applications to present such work should include an appendix with a copy of the published manuscript or a copy of the abstract of the grant. Abstracts of work previously published will not be published in the Digital Commons.

Selection Standards for Poster Display

All applications will be reviewed by a panel of individuals from within and outside of the Academy. The panel will use the following standards:

  • The educational purpose of the work is clear and worthwhile
  • Appropriate methods were used to accomplish work
  • The outcomes are of value to the educator as well as to other members of his/her educational community (within or outside Baylor)
  • The format and content of the abstract is clear and grammatically correct (suggesting that the final poster will be as well)

Selection Criteria for Recognition Award:

Judges will consider the following criteria in identifying the three poster displays which best represent the ideals of educational scholarship:

  • Clarity and quality of Goals (e.g., Innovativeness and creativity).
  • Preparation and qualifications of the educator(s) to do the work
  • Appropriateness of methods
  • Merit and worth of the results of the work to the educational community, to the College and to the educator’s department (i.e., the degree to which the work enhances knowledge in education and provides information for further improvement in education and training).
  • Quality of presentation (both poster design and oral discussion)
  • The degree to which the work enhances the applicant’s and other educators’ development.
