Faculty Education Initiatives
The “fac-ed” web site brings you comprehensive information on Baylor’s Faculty Educator Initiatives. College-wide programs for recognition as an educator, a wide variety of programs for development as an educator and opportunities in teaching and evaluation are described. Many of these programs have been recognized nationally as models for faculty development in medical schools. Our commitment to our faculty supports continuous growth as teachers, mentors and scholars and the recognition of these accomplishments as critical to the mission of the College.
Recognition as an Educator
- Educator Recognition Awards
- The Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. Faculty Excellence Award is a criterion-based program that recognizes faculty contributions in four categories: Teaching and Evaluation; Development of Enduring Educational Materials; Educational Leadership; Educational Research.
- The Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson, Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education recognizes up to four faculty members annually who have made long-standing, consistent, and highly valued contributions to the educational mission of the College.
- The John P. McGovern Outstanding Teacher Award recognizes faculty for outstanding teaching in the Medical School Curriculum.
- The Marc Dresden Award for Excellence in Graduate Education has been given annually since 1993 to honor outstanding contributions to graduate education by a BCM faculty member
- Academy of Distinguished Educators - The Academy of Distinguished Educators recognizes the educational scholarship of faculty members involved in all of the educational missions of the College. All members of the Academy of Distinguished Educators have received the Fulbright and Jaworski L. L. P. Faculty Excellence Award.
- Skill Building Opportunities - The College provides over 100 hours per year on a rotating two year schedule of workshops, mini-fellowships, and invited speakers to improve the educational skills of its teaching faculty. Consult the Master Calendar for event dates and times.
- Educational Scholars Fellowship Program - The primary aim of the two-year ESFP is to enhance the educational mission of the College by improving the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of individual faculty and empowering them to make a positive contribution to the College and to their department.
- The University of Houston Master of Education in Teaching with an Emphasis in the Health Sciences – This degree granting program is taught at the Texas Medical Center and is designed to meet the needs of the medical educator who is seeking to increase his or her instructional effectiveness and/or educational scholarship.
- Educator Peer Coaching and Review - Educator peer coaching and review is valuable as a mechanism for the continuing improvement of faculty educational skills. Two techniques are emphasized: one is a self-initiated technique, Critical Pairs, where interested faculty can pair up to provide reciprocal reviews, and the second is the Educator Consultation Program, which asks faculty members to request a peer consult for an area of interest and select a specific volunteer reviewer with advanced training in that area.
- Team Based Learning - Team Based Learning brings together autonomous small-groups working independently in classes with high student-faculty ratios (e.g., up to 200:1) without losing the benefits of faculty-led small groups with lower ratios (e.g., 7:1).
- Faculty Development Conference - A 2020 Vision of Faculty Development across the Medical Education Continuum - More than 70 national and international leaders in the field of medical education took part in this conference hosted by Baylor College of Medicine Feb. 26-27. Attendees worked in small groups on topics important in the field of faculty medical educational development. All educators can benefit from these discussions of the future of medical education.
Development as an Educator
Opportunities in Teaching and Evaluation
- Teaching Opportunities - In 1995, the College implemented an innovative, revised medical curriculum. While still incorporating traditional lecture courses, the new curriculum includes new inter-departmental courses to help integrate involvement with patients early in the education process, as well as allow for an early introduction of clinical reasoning.
- Learner Assessment of Teaching - Individual departments and programs have established their own learner assessment procedures and databases, although some evaluations can be obtained from the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education.
Committee for Educator Development
The mission of the Committee for Educator Development is to assist the educational mission of the College by fostering a pro-teaching environment, increasing opportunities for teaching skills development, promoting the recognition of faculty educators, and increasing faculty involvement in teaching.
