The Occupational Health Program conducts health evaluations for all new employees at Baylor College of Medicine, as well as for trainees who continue at Baylor as staff or faculty. The evaluation can vary from individual to individual but typically includes an assessment of your work activities, review of health status, review of vaccinations, and TB testing.
Tuberculosis Testing
All persons are required to have tuberculosis testing from Occupational Health at the start of employment. This is true even if you have had recent testing elsewhere. A TB test is the injection of a small amount of solution under the skin; it tests for whether a person has been exposed and infected with TB. The test must be read by OHP 48-72 hours after placement. Learn more about TB.
If you have had a positive TB test in the past and can provide documentation of the test result, then you do not need to be tested again. Likewise, if you provide documentation of treatment for active or latent TB then you do not need to be tested.
Please note that BCG vaccination is not a contraindication to TB testing. We regularly test people who have had BCG in the past.
New Employee Actions
New employees must complete the following:
- Have your TB test placed by OHP when you start work at Baylor. Most persons will have their TB test placed at New Employee Orientation.
- Please go to the OHP Clinic to have your TB test read and finish your health evaluation.
- Provide documentation of prior immunizations.
- OHP will review all of the information with you when we see you, as well as your job activities at BCM and discuss relevant health risks.
