Participating Departments
Current Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Center membership represents eight departments and multiple disciplines. The three most prominent departments are medicine, molecular and cellular biology, and pediatrics.
Margaret M. and Albert B. Alkek Department of Medicine
The department of medicine has many active programs in clinical and laboratory research, supported by over $60 million annually in extramural funding, mostly from the NIH. The diabetes/endocrinology fellowship program is housed in this department. Academic clinical diabetes research and education are supported by the medicine departments of all the BCM-affiliated hospitals. Many of the academic programs and centers that interact closely with the DERC are based wholly or partly in this department.
Department of Pediatrics
BCM has one of the largest and best NIH-funded pediatrics departments in the country, with over $80 million annually in extramural funding, mostly from the NIH. Several DERC-related programs and centers are based wholly or partly in this department. The adult and pediatric endocrinology fellowship programs are integrated and all fellows rotate through Texas Children's Hospital.
Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology
MCB is one of the strongest basic science departments in the country. It is supported by over $40 million annually in extramural funding, the highest in the nation for a department without a clinical component. The program in molecular endocrinology and gene regulation is one of the strongest in the country. The department also houses a new program in adipocyte biology.
