Mouse Metabolism Core

Description

The Mouse Metabolism Core under DERC is one of 11 NIH-funded core facilities throughout the United States that provide research support to DERC investigators. This core serves all new and established investigators in their research of diabetes and metabolic diseases. The core also offers extensive support to other investigators wishing to address diabetes-related hypotheses in terms of metabolic disorders and diabetes utilizing mouse models.

Services

The Core is located at the 6th floor of the Margarat Alkek Building for Biomedical Research (ABBR), Room R630. Operation Hours: 9:30am to 5pm. Services provided by the Mouse Metabolism Core include:

  • Euglycemic Hyperinsulinemic Clamp: Hepatic glucose production, glucose disposal rate, glucose infusion rate, glycogen synthesis and tissue specific glucose uptake using conscious mouse
  • Long term infusion through jugular vein in non-sedated mouse for metabolic studies
  • MRI: Body composition analysis of live and awake mice
  • Indirect Calorimetry: Energy expenditure and metabolic changes by measuring VO2, VCO2, RQ (respiratory quotient) and heat production
  • Mouse activity monitoring: Total activity including horizontal activity, distance travel, rest time by beam block technique
  • GTT: Intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test and oral GTT
  • ITT: Insulin tolerance test
  • In vivo lipolysis
  • Lipid profile measurement: VLDL, HDL, LDL
  • Routine blood parameter check: Includes glucose, insulin, cholesterol, leptine, adiponectine, TG, free fatty acid, glycerol
  • Freshly isolated primary hepatocytes
  • Isolated mouse islets

The core also provides help in data analysis and scientific explanation with proper discussion related to the metabolic changes.

**Discounts are offered to BCM faculty or Investigators with NIH funding. For-Profit coporations, please call for pricing.
