a hooded bench in the DERCMembership in the Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Center is determined by the DERC Executive Committee, which reviews applications from the BCM faculty. The faculty members who participate are highly competitive and well-funded investigators. In fiscal year 2005, their NIH funding for DERC-related research totaled $44 million direct cost and their NIH funding for nonDERC-related research was $10 million.

Criteria for membership

  • Research area must be relevant to diabetes (diagnosis, normal and abnormal physiology, prevention, or treatment)
  • Physical and/or intellectual participation in DERC activities, including research, review and oversight, enrichment, and training programs
  • Using or providing shared core resources
  • Funded pilot/feasibility projects

Annual review

The Executive Committee performs yearly reviews of existing membership to ensure continued involvement of DERC members in the areas defined by the membership criteria. New members will be reviewed yearly and ad hoc to endure the DERC has an involved and active membership.
