| Statement of Goals: |
| This elective provides students the opportunity to evaluate, assess, and follow the progress of children with infectious disease problems in a Consultation Service setting. At the discretion of the attending physician, the primary site for the elective may be modified to enhance the student's educational experience.
(Limited number of visiting/international student participation- must have adequate preparation for this advanced elective and be approved by Dr. Palazzi.) |
| Learning Activities |
| The student should learn to elicit appropriate historical information important for determining the diagnosis of specific infectious diseases; to assess physical features integral to the diagnosis of these conditions; to develop organ system-based and pathogen-based differential diagnosis; and to propose a plan of management based on the differential considerations generated. Students should learn aspects of antimicrobial therapy in pediatrics including indications for use, side effects, mode of excretion and monitoring studies for major classes of antibiotics. The elective provides the students with opportunities to see the course of infectious diseases such as meningitis, septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, childhood exanthems, Kawasaki syndrome, and urinary tract infections, as well as infectious processes such as bacteremia and fungemia in immunocompromised children. |
