Statement of Goals:
The goal is to provide students in-depth training in travel and tropical medicine. Following the course, the student should be prepared to diagnose and treat disease endemic in developing countries, be familiar with the epidemiology and prevention of illnesses in international travelers, be prepared to provide pre-travel counseling on prevention of illnesses to travelers to developing countries, and be aware of public health problems in developing countries.
Learning Activities
The objectives for the course are heavily influenced by the requirements of the certification process and the examination -"The Certificate of Knowledge in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Travelers Health". Activities will consist of didactic lectures, seminars and laboratory sessions in addition to hands-on experiences later in the track which will prepare the student to meet the rigorous academic requirements of the program.
Evaluation Methods
Students will be graded on their level of participation in the seminars/case discussions. Groups of students will be evaluated based on the identification of unknown parasite specimens. Brief short-answer quizzes will also be conducted after 2 weeks and at the end of the session.
