Statement of Goals:
As a member of the clinical consulting team, the student participates, in this advanced elective, by evaluating patients who have a variety of illnesses most (but not all) of which are infectious in etiology.
Learning Activities
Students see newly referred patients in rotation and often go over their cases with residents before presenting them to faculty at daily teaching rounds. Principles of diagnosis and management are stressed, and patients are seen until the ID problem is thought to be resolved. Students join faculty at city-wide infectious disease rounds each week as well as other individual teaching conferences that vary slightly with the individual hospital. These conferences include introduction to microbiology, antibiotic management, case discussion, etc. Outpatient experience is available at Ben Taub General Hospital and Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the form of a rotation in an HIV clinic one-half day each week.
