Needs Statement
Due to changes in neonatal nutrition management, healthcare professionals who provide care to high-risk infants need to have up-to-date continuing education. The interdisciplinary approach of this conference will address the needs of pediatricians, neonatologists, neonatal nurses, nurse practitioners, dietitians, and others.
Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to:
- Define basic nutritional requirements for neonatal growth.
- Recall specific nutritional problems faced by low birth weight and premature infants.
- Identify approaches to addressing the nutritional concerns for premature infants after hospital discharge.
- Identify the effects of mental health to family members during a NICU stay.
- Explain the importance of increasing the incidence and duration of breastfeeding.
- Explain the history, benefits, and advances in the use of human milk that will help improve the intake of maternal human milk and growth of the neonate population.
- Identify and manage complex conditions such as intestinal failure, cardiac defects, and GI issues in the neonatal population.
- Outline the role and benefit of the neonatal dietitian and how to collect and publish data in the neonatal population.
