Fundamentals of Clinical Investigation - 2010
The Fundamentals of Clinical Investigation course is held every July for 16 evenings, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. The objective of the course is to train physicians and other health care workers to interpret the clinical experimental literature. You do not have to be a student in the Clinical Scientist Training Program to take this course. It is accredited by the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences for 3 credit hours. There will be an exam at the end of the course, and it will be graded. There is no charge for this course.
Completion of the module on Ethical Conduct in Clinical Research fulfills the National Institutes of Health/ADAMHA requirement for instruction in the ethical conduct of research. The module may be attended without taking the whole course. You must attend all six lectures in order to receive a certificate of completion of this module.
The course will next be held from July 6 - 30, 2010.
Sandwiches are served at 5 p.m. and the first lecture is at 5:30 p.m.
To sign up for the course:
If you are a graduate student, sign up in the usual way for a course with the Graduate School.
If you are not a graduate student and would like to take the course for credit, download a "Special Student Registration" CREDIT form, fill in your personal information, sign it, ask your advisor to sign it (next to "employer"), and fax it to Renee Elawar at 713-798-7119 (or scan it and e-mail to relawar@bcm.edu). Be sure to include your e-mail address on the form, so that she can acknowledge receipt. If you would like to audit the course, use this "Special Student Registration" AUDIT form. (You do not have to get the dean's signature, we will do that.)
We recommend that you take the course for credit if there is any chance that you will join the Clinical Scientist Training Program at a later time, and also because you will get more out of it.
Participants will be assigned to groups, each of which will critique a research article of its choice and present this critique to the class on July 30. This activity is optional for the audit students, but highly recommended.
Here is the tentative course schedule.
