Annual Retreat

In February of each year, the program has a one-day retreat for scholars and their mentors. It is held away from the Baylor campus. The purpose of the retreat is to allow students the opportunity to present their research to outside reviewers, and for us to receive critical feedback about the program. We invite three successful investigators from around the country to come to Houston to learn about our programs and hear presentations from our scholars. The day is educational and rewarding for all participants, and is a requirement for all scholars in the program, together with their mentors.

Next year the retreat will be on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010.

We will be joined by the recipients of the Child Health Research Center career development awards.

The location is the Houstonian Hotel, 111 North Post Oak Lane, just west of the West Loop between Memorial and Woodway Drive.

The day starts with breakfast, followed by a panel discussion by the three invited reviewers, Dr. Morey Haymond, Program Director of the Clinical Scientist Training Program and the Child Health Research Center, and Dr. Biykem Bozkurt, Associate Director of the CSTP. Discussion focuses on the road from junior faculty to accomplished researcher, with the possible pitfalls, and ways in which to handle them. We then break up into three groups, and each scholar will give a short (15-minute) power point presentation on their research. The day will end with a discussion between the reviewers and the scholars, and critical appraisals of the programs by the reviewers.
