Biographical Information
Rintala is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Baylor College
of Medicine. She has been active in a program of spinal cord
injury (SCI) research for 20 years. Rintala's primary research
foci have been on the development of methods to measure rehabilitation
outcomes and the assessment of the life status of individuals
with SCI living in the community. Rintala has authored numerous
scientific publications to disseminate these research findings.
A particular area of interest has been on the relationship of
social support to rehabilitation outcomes. Her work has generally
been conducted under the auspices of a series of Rehabilitation
Research and Training Centers and Regional SCI Model Systems sponsored
by the National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research
(NIDRR). Rintala has also participated in a nationwide investigation
into the psychosocial development of women with physical disabilities
funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and in a study
of adaptation to SCI funded by the American Occupational Therapy
Foundation. Rintala received her doctorate in social psychology
in 1982 from the University of Houston. She is currently Center
Co-Director and Research Director of the Rehabilitation Research
and Training Center on Community Integration for Individuals with
Spinal Cord Injury.
