BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Carol Howland

Biographical Information

Carol Howland is Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Associate Director of the Center for Research on Women with Disabilities. Ms. Howland has completed the course work for her Masters in Public Health, concentrating on general and reproductive epidemiology, women's health issues, health services delivery and performance, health policy, disability law, and thesis research on access to effective health care for women with joint and connective tissue disease, and will begin a Ph.D. program in 1996. She has also participated in numerous continuing medical education programs. Her research and writing have focused on dating, sexuality, and health services delivery to women with physical disabilities, as well as personal assistance services, independent living, lupus, pain management, sleep disorders, and depression. She has produced 18 articles for publication in academic journals, published 5 articles communicating to the general public, edited 5 books, given presentations at 20 local and national conferences, and served on the Editorial Board of 2 journals. She is Project Director of a NIDDR-funded longitudinal research project on associations between personal assistance services, preventable health incidents, and health care utilization. With 15 years of experience medical writing, Ms. Howland is a former President of the Southwest Chapter of the American Medical Writers Association and member of its National Board of Directors.

Ms. Howland has personal experience dealing with systemic lupus erythematosus.
