Lab member

  • Yongtao Guan, Principal Investigator
  • Yongtao (a.k.a. Grant) graduated with honors from Southeast University in Nanjing, China in 1996. He earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Mathematics, University of Idaho, in 2006. There he studied population genetics and stochastic processes, working closely with Steve Krone and Paul Joyce. He joined Matthew Stephens's lab in the summer of 2006 as a postdoc, working on Bayesian methods and the applications in GWAS. Chicago's harsh environment (especially the winter) depressed him and jump started his mid-life crisis. He managed to get-by by concentrating on statistics, coding, and running. In 2010, he landed a job as an assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine and moved to Houston -- that cured the depression but started the allergy.

  • Alex Renwick, Senior Biostatistician
  • Alex graduated from Rice in 2000 with BA in mathematical economics. He then started his post graduate education in statistics at Rice. In 2004, he left the Ph.D. program with a master's degree and went on to work for various high-tec companies. As a stepping-stone to come back to academia, he joined the lab as a senior biostatistician since February, 2011. Alex is interested in Tai Chi and fencing.
