Apprenticeship Opportunities

The HCBC collaborates with the Harris County Hospital District to offer a breastfeeding counselor apprenticeship program at Ben Taub General Hospital.
Requirements:
1) Bi-lingual - English/Spanish
2) Prior breastfeeding management training equivalent to the TX Department of State Health Services 2-day course “Principles of Lactation Management”. Information is available at the following web site:

3) Enrollment as a Hospital volunteer at Ben Taub Hospital. Information is available at the following website:

Program:
1) Supervised skills acquisition progressing from observation to supervised procedures through confirmation of proficiency in approximately 20 skill areas.
2) Includes bedside and outpatient care.
3) A certificate of completion is provided after mastery has been demonstrated in at least 80% of targeted skills.
Cost:
Apprentices are required to "pay" for the training by volunteering at the hospital for a minimum of 75 hours after training has been completed.
