Student Life
Full Financial Support
The CMB Program is funded by NIH training grant GM08231. The Program provides an extremely competitive stipend every year that you are a student. In addition, health insurance and tuition are completely covered. Although your stipend is always guaranteed, we help--and encourage!--students to apply for outside funding. It's a great learning experience, particularly for those who plan to eventually run an academic lab. Plus, we make it worth your effort--the Dean recognizes every student who receives outside funding with an additional $2,000/yr. supplement, in addition to the stipend. Finally, each year the CMB Program awards top performing students a $ 500 award.
Other Types of Support
Although graduate school can be the most exciting time of your life, it can also be a bit stressful. Baylor makes sure that none of this stands in your way by providing an array of student support services. We have an awesome Associate Dean, Dr. Scott Basinger, whose goal is to grease the wheels of student life. Plus, Baylor College of Medicine has a minority student advisor, a disabilities coordinator and an international student advisor.
Great Living Accommodations
Most of our students--as well as our faculty--live within a few miles of the Medical Center, in the heart of the "inner loop" that serves as a city within a city. We do not provide housing for graduate students because a variety of outstanding housing options are readily available. Although some CMB students pool their resources to rent a nearby private house, others choose to rent their own one-bedroom apartments.
There are several residential neighborhoods all within easy reach of the medical center area either by bus, bike ride, or the new light rail public transportation system. Each neighborhood has a distinctive style: the Museum District neighborhood is a mix of museums, coffeehouses and a few restaurants, whereas the nearby Montrose area is a funkier combination of bars, antique shops and cafes.
