Healthy Volunteers

Volunteers Needed to Role-Play Patients

Healthy men and women 18 years of age or older are needed by the department of Family and Community Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston to act as patients for the Standardized Patient Program. Standardized Patients (SPs) assist in the training of medical students by providing standardized learning experiences; enabling students to practice interviewing, examinations, patient education, and management negotiation skills; and evaluating students' clinical skills. Standardized Patient projects occur weekday afternoons, and SPs are compensated for all training and role performance. To learn more about the Standardized Patient Program, please log on to http://www.bcm.edu/familymed/spprogram/ . To volunteer, call Eugenia Greenfield (713) 798 7952. Full-time Baylor employees are not eligible.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine need egg donors. If you are a non-smoking female between the ages of 21 - 34 years of age in good health you may qualify. Compensation is provided. For more information please call (713)798-8230.

Intestinal Cytokines in Cryptosporidiosis

Normal, healthy volunteers age 18-50 with no pre-existing medical or psychiatric conditions are wanted to participate in research studies on the immune response to Cryptosporidium parvum. This organism causes self-limited infection in normal hosts, but clears after a few days. Volunteers will be compensated for their time and efforts. For further information, call Dr. A. Clinton White at 713-798-6846.

Sperm Study

Healthy male volunteers are needed by the Scott Department of Urology at Baylor College of Medicine. We are running this study to see whether or not Minocycline Extended-Release Tablets, sold as Solodyn, affects spermatogenesis (the process of formation of mature sperm) in healthy males. Minocycline is an antibiotic that has been used successfully for many years to help treat acne and other infectious diseases. Solodyn is the first minocycline approved to treat moderate or severe acne (it helps reduce the number of pimples). We will look to see if your sperm count is the same as it was before treatment after 12 weeks of once-daily treatment of Solodyn. Some people in the study will receive Minocycline Extended-Release Tablets, other people will receive placebo. The total length of the study is approximately 24 weeks (6 months). Subjects who meet the requirements to be in the study, will continue in the treatment phase (receive either active or placebo tablets) of the study for 12 weeks. Subjects will return to the clinic 4 weeks and 8 weeks after completion of the treatment phase of the study, with the final study visit approximately 12 weeks after last dose. Semen and blood samples will be collected at some of the visits. Volunteers will be compensated $1000 for entire study participation. For more information and to find out if you are eligible to participate in this research study, please call (713) 798-9140.

Brain Imaging Study

We are looking for volunteers who had an orthopedic injury (broken bone, fracture, or sprain) within last three months. Participants will undergo cognitive testing (a few questionnaires and interviews) and an MRI scan at three months after injury. Patients seen for the evaluation and scan will receive $75.00 total as compensation for time and effort.

Selection Criteria: 1) Between the ages of 14 and 30; 2) Injured within last 3 months; 3) No history of epilepsy, stroke, brain tumor, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder. 4) No history of head injury (only for patients with orthopedic injuries). Please contact the study coordinator, Maya Troyanskaya, at 713-798-7527 for more information.
