Galveston County Officials Adopt Recommendation of Baylor Report On Childhood Lead Poisoning in Galveston, Texas


(November 19, 2007) Dr. Mark Guidry, chief operating officer of the Galveston county health district, and Dr. Ben Raimer, who heads community health services at the University of Texas Medical Branch, volunteer to share the title "lead czar." Appointment of a lead czar was one of 14 recommendations in a report released by the Center's Environmental Health Section on October 28, 2007. This report resulted from a study led by Assistant Professor of Medicine, Winifred J. Hamilton, Ph.D., S.M. examining childhood lead poisoning in Galveston, Texas. Funded by the Kempner Fund this study mapped cases of lead poisoning reported between November 16, 1992 and January 31, 2006.

Armin D. Weinberg, PhD Elected Chair-Elect of the Texas Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition


(November 15, 2007) Center Director Armin D. Weinberg, PhD is elected chair-elect of the Texas Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition. He will serve on the Executive Committee immediately, fill in for the current chair when he is unavailable, and will become chair of the Coalition on January 1, 2010 with a two-year term that expires December 31, 2011.

Report of the Texas Pain Summit Posted on the Website of the Alliance of State Pain Initiatives

(November 5, 2007) The formal report of the of the Texas Pain Summit, The Politics of Pain: Balancing Vigilance and Compassion - Report of the Texas Pain Summit 2006-2007, is now posted on the Web site of Alliance of State Pain Initiatives. Baylor College of Medicine joined other Texas organizations in support of the Summit and development of the report. This support included the participation of Center faculty in conducting surveys of Texas physicians and nurses in collaboration with the Texas Medical Association's Physician Oncology Education Program. Both Center faculty and the Executive Director of the Intercultural Cancer Council, which is housed at the Center, participated in the the Summit.
