About Our Center
Our center began in 1975 as the Education Division of the DeBakey Heart Center. Our programs, which include research, education, and demonstration projects, community programs and health policy to reduce the burden of health disparities among culturally diverse, at-risk populations. Our target audiences are the general public and healthcare consumers as well as healthcare providers and professionals. Translating research into practice has been the basis of all center projects since the earliest days of the DeBakey Heart Center and long before the current popularity of the term.
Our Goals:
- To generate research on the links between biology, behavior and the environment as they relate to chronic diseases and other public health issues
- To translate research findings into education and outreach programs that are meaningful to health professionals and the general public
- To foster interdisciplinary collaboration and linkages with a variety of internal and external partners in the United States and abroad
- To redress gaps and diverse health status of minority and medically underserved populations through health policy research
