Prostate Cancer Program
(Michael Ittmann, M.D., Ph.D., Leader;
Dov Kadmon, M.D., Co-Leader;
David Rowley, Ph.D., Co-Leader)

Currently this program has 33 members and is supported by a SPORE grant (first awarded in 1992) and grants from NCI, other NIH institutes, DOD, and the VA Merit Review Program. There is a heavy emphasis on translational research that is focused around three research themes: biomarkers and epidemiology, steroid and small molecule intervention, and gene/immuno-therapy.
The Biomarkers and Epidemiology Theme involves investigators from Urology, Pathology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, and Molecular and Human Genetics. The discovery and testing of diagnostic/prognostic biomarkers for prostate cancer has been a long-standing interest of the Prostate Cancer Program. Current work involves serum markers, immunohisotchemical markers, expression microarrays and genomic markers (CGH and SNPs). The development of epidemiological studies is relatively new and serves to fully integrate the biomarker discovery and clinical analysis components that are well developed.
The Steroid and Small Molecule Intervention Theme involves well-established translational scientists from Molecular and Cellular Biology and Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and is characterized by unique and innovative molecular approaches to therapy involving not only "traditional" steroid receptors, but also a search for other, related nuclear receptors and coactivators.
The Gene/Immuno-therapy Theme is a highly developed program based in the Department of Urology Pathology and Immunology in collaboration with the Cell and Gene Therapy Program that involves an active clinical trials component. The Cancer Center will develop additional strength in this area through recruitment of a medical oncologist with an interest in tranlational/clinical research in prostate cancer.
