Baylor College of Medicine

Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, the only private medical school in the Greater Southwest, was founded in 1900 and is today an internationally respected medical and research institution known for excellence in education, research and patient care.

The medical school began an affiliation with Baylor University that lasted until 1969, when it became an independent institution and entered into a partnership with the State of Texas to provide physician training for Texas residents. Today, Baylor College of Medicine consistently ranks among the top of the country's 125 medical schools. In 2003, U.S. News & World Report ranked the College No. 12 on its list of top medical schools. The National Science Foundation also lists Baylor fifth among all U.S. medical schools for National Institutes of Health funding, and No. 1 for biological sciences.

Located in the Texas Medical Center, a 700-acre complex housing 42 member-institutions, Baylor College of Medicine has affiliations with six teaching hospitals, each with national and international reputations for medical excellence. Baylor physicians treat more than 137,000 inpatients and 2 million outpatients each year.

The College has total research support exceeding $381 million, and has more than 70 research and patient-care centers and units. Currently, Baylor trains more than 3,000 medical, graduate, nurse anesthesia and allied health students, and residents each year.
