Office of Outreach and Health Disparities-CPRIT Funded Prevention Project

Community Collaboration to Empower the Medically Underserved for Cancer Prevention and Control

The Office of Outreach and Health Disparities at the Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center, in collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Family and Community Medicine was awarded a three-year, $2.5 million, prevention grant from the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT).

The funded project titled Community Collaboration to Empower the Medically Underserved for Cancer Prevention and Control (PP100201) will establish a joint collaboration between Baylor College of Medicine, Harris County Hospital District, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and several community service organizations (Hope Through Grace, Hope Clinic, Neighborhood Centers, Inc., and the American Cancer Society). This collaborative, known as the Community Network for Cancer Prevention, was established for the purpose of improving colorectal and cervical cancer screening services and referral and follow-up processes for medically underserved Harris County residents with abnormal colorectal and cervical cancer screening tests.

Forum Theater Project

As part of this collaboration, the Office of Outreach and Health Disparities Community Arts Program will co-lead the Forum Theater Project (FTP). The FTP is an education program and outreach strategy, which is part of a large cancer prevention project designed to improve colorectal and cervical cancer morbidity and mortality in the medically underserved. FT is an interactive theater model that stimulates community involvement in problem-solving. A principal component of this strategy is the involvement of Community Health Workers (CHWs) in the development of cancer screening messages to be communicated at FT performances to engage the community around issues related to colorectal and cervical cancer prevention, risk management, and screening.
